Elucidating the Effect of Interfacial Interactions on Crystal Orientations in Thin Films of Polythiophenes

Oleksandr Dolynchuk et al.

Summary: This study reveals that by crystallizing P3HT on graphene, a double-layered edge-on and face-on crystal orientation can be achieved. By modifying the side-chain chemical composition in poly[3-(6-bromohexyl)]thiophene, the influence of the interface with vacuum can be reduced, resulting in full face-on orientation in thin films. These results demonstrate that directed crystallization can be used to control the orientation of semicrystalline functional polymers in thin films by taking into account the interaction with both interfaces.

Providing a Window into the Phase Behavior of Semiconducting Polymers

Ioan Botiz et al.

Summary: The targeted assembly of functional architectures for soft photonics and electronics relies on a rigorous understanding of semiconducting polymer phase behavior, which is challenging to develop due to the complex chemical structures of these macromolecules. Solid-state structure formation and resulting properties are sensitive to thermal and temporal parameters during processing, requiring detailed knowledge of macromolecular semiconductors' phase behavior. This will open pathways toward a knowledge and methodology platform for the controlled materials assembly of soft electronics/photonics systems, with potential impact on the broader soft matter area.
