Amphibole as a witness of chromitite formation and fluid metasomatism in ophiolites

Qi-Qi Pan et al.

Summary: Amphibole occurrences in chromitites, dunites, and harzburgites from the Lycian ophiolite in Turkey provide evidence for water involvement in chromitite formation and metasomatism. The composition and crystallization temperatures of interstitial amphibole and amphibole inclusions in chromite suggest the presence of hydrous melts/fluids during the initial subduction of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere.

Silica-rich spinel harzburgite residues formed by fractional hybridization-melting of the intra-oceanic supra-subduction zone mantle: New evidence from TUBAF seamount peridotites

A. Benard et al.

Summary: Recent studies on peridotite xenoliths from mantle lithosphere beneath active arcs in Kamchatka and West Bismarck show they are enriched in silica and depleted in incompatible elements, likely due to partial melting processes in the SSZ mantle asthenosphere. The peridotites from TUBAF seamount in New Ireland also exhibit residual SSZ signatures, indicating their last melting event occurred in the mantle wedge. This suggests a shallow mantle decompression fore-arc environment during Oligocene to Miocene subduction along the Manus-Kilinailau trench.

Melt Migration and Interaction in a Dunite Channel System within Oceanic Forearc Mantle: the Yushigou Harzburgite-Dunite Associations, North Qilian Ophiolite (NW China)

Xiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The Harzburgite-dunite associations in the Yushigou ophiolitic complex provide insights into melt migration and melt-rock interaction above a subduction zone. A three-stage model has been proposed to describe the history of melt channel formation in the oceanic arc mantle, revealing the complex processes involved in the interaction between multiple batches of melt or fluid and a lithospheric mantle wedge dunitic channel system.

A new model for chromitite formation in ophiolites: Fluid immiscibility

Benxun Su et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new model for the genesis of podiform chromitite, emphasizing the vital role of hydrous fluids in the formation process. The model suggests that chromite-rich droplets coalesce and crystallize during magma circulation, leading to the formation of podiform chromitite. Immiscible chromite-rich liquids play a significant role in the fractionation of elemental and isotopic compositions, ultimately resulting in the enrichment of fluids in the magma chamber.

Multi-stage fluid infiltration and metasomatism in supra-subduction zone mantle: evidence from halogens and noble gases in the Leka Ophiolite Complex, Norway

Elliot J. Carter et al.

Summary: Extreme halogen abundance heterogeneity is observed in the mantle and lower crustal transition zone of the Leka ophiolite in Norway, covering much of the known global range of serpentinite compositions. The coupled analysis of halogens and noble gases in serpentinites reveals insights into the sources of fluids and the relative timing of high- and low-temperature fluid infiltration episodes.

The Critical Role of Fluid-Mediated Diffusion in Anomalous Fe-Mg-O Isotope Fractionations in Ultramafic Rocks of Ophiolites

Ben-Xun Su et al.

Summary: This study presents new Fe, Mg, and O isotopes and published Li isotope data of olivine and chromite to reveal the mechanisms of inter- and intra-mineral isotope fractionation during chromitite formation in the Pozanti-Karsanti ophiolite in southern Turkey. The results suggest that fluids are critical for ion exchange between chromite and olivine and for significant modification of the host harzburgites.

Rapid transition from MORB-type to SSZ-type oceanic crust generation following subduction initiation: insights from the mafic dikes and metamorphic soles in the Pozanti-Karsanti ophiolite, SE Turkey

Guang-Yao Xin et al.

Summary: The Pozanti-Karsanti ophiolite provides a unique opportunity to study oceanic crust formation and the initiation processes of subduction in the Neo-Tethyan subduction system. The temporal-geochemical sequence suggests that intra-oceanic subduction initiated at 91.9 ± 0.8 Ma within an older lithosphere (>122 Ma) of the Inner Tauride ocean, marking the inception of a mature subduction zone.
