Dissecting Biological and Synthetic Soft-Hard Interfaces for Tissue-Like Systems

Yin Fang et al.

Summary: Soft and hard materials at interfaces exhibit mismatched behaviors, and leveraging or mitigating these differences can yield interfacial processes difficult to achieve in pure soft or pure hard phases. This review explores the fundamental chemical roles and principles involved in designing these interfaces, as well as the tools required to uncover the chemical processes in these soft-hard interfacial systems. The proposed soft-hard interaction framework and discussed processes provide potential opportunities for both fundamental studies and applications in tissue-like materials and devices.

Organic Reactions Using Clay and Clay-Supported Catalysts: A Survey of Recent Literature

Gopalpur Nagendrappa et al.

Summary: Clays and modified or supported clays are widely used catalysts in organic reactions due to their easy structural modifications, low cost, eco-friendly nature, and ready availability. A survey of literature from 2011-2020 shows that biodiesel synthesis and wastewater treatment are widely investigated transformations in clay-catalyzed organic reactions and have practical applications.

Enhanced Artificial Enzyme Activities on the Reconstructed Sawtoothlike Nanofacets of Pure and Pr-Doped Ceria Nanocubes

Lei Jiang et al.

Summary: A simple one-step thermal oxidation process was established to increase {110} and {111} nanofacets on ceria nanocubes, leading to improved enzymatic activities. The enhancement may be attributed to the sawtoothlike {111} nanofacets and defects that facilitate oxygen mobility and the formation of oxygen vacancies on the surface, without changing the bulk properties. Additionally, possible mechanisms of nanoceria as artificial enzymes were proposed in this study, suggesting the potential for future design of highly efficient nanozymes.

Important Roles of Water Clusters Confined in a Nanospace as Revealed by a Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Study

Tomohiko Okada et al.

Summary: The study investigated the states of water molecules confined in a nanospace designed by montmorillonite and charge compensating benzylammonium, using caffeine as a probe. It was found that water molecules formed bimolecular layers in the interlayer space and could expand the space, with caffeine molecules replacing some water molecules to further increase the interlayer space. Time-resolved synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction showed that the intercalation of caffeine reached a steady state within a few minutes, indicating a limited interlayer expansion in various solvents.

Natural mineral bentonite as catalyst for efficient isomerization of biomass-derived glucose to fructose in water

Xin Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of the textural and acid-base properties of bentonite on glucose isomerization reaction, showing that Bromsted base was responsible for the isomerization. The highest fructose yield of 39.2% with 86.3% selectivity was achieved, and alkaline rinse and calcination were able to recover most of the spent catalyst's catalytic activity.
