From nanoporous to transparent MgAl2O4 spinel-Nanostructural flexibility by reaction densification of metastable powders

D. M. Dewitt et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the reaction kinetics of nMgO and γ-Al2O3 to form MgAl2O4 are significantly faster and occur at lower temperatures compared to previous studies with α-Al2O3 and muMgO. Enhanced reaction rates are attributed to short diffusion distances, faster diffusion through defected γ-Al2O3, and similarities in crystal structures between reactants and products. Understanding the reaction and densification kinetics of this reactant combination can lead to the production of a wide range of microstructures for high temperature energy absorbing materials and optically transparent spinel.
