Modeling mixing dynamics in uncovered baffled and unbaffled stirred tanks

Tomasz Plusa et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of measurements in uncovered baffled and unbaffled stirred tanks, using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) to simulate mixing dynamics. Three turbulence models were verified and simulations were performed in both steady- and transient-state approaches. A simplified numerical model without the central vortex was proposed to reduce computational time, which can be used for designing and optimizing the mixing process.

Chaotic mixing and mass transfer characteristics of fractal impellers in gas-liquid stirred tank

Deyin Gu et al.

Summary: Fractal impeller showed better gas holdup, smaller bubble size and gas-liquid dispersion performance compared to pitched-blade impeller, leading to an increase in volume mass transfer coefficient. The experimental results provide theoretical guidance for the optimal design of gas-liquid stirred tanks.

Investigation of Low-Frequency Phenomena within Flow Pattern in Standard Mixing Vessel Induced by Pitched Blade Impeller

Tomas Bruha et al.

Summary: This experimental study focused on the dynamics of fluid flow in a standard mixing vessel with water and a pitched blade impeller pumping downward. The investigation revealed the presence of large-scale mean-flow variations known as flow Macro-Instability (MI), and the influence of baffles on local vertical and tangential flow patterns. Frequency analysis provided insights into the interconnections between adjacent flow structures.

Impeller shape-optimization of stirred-tank reactor: CFD and fluid structure interaction analyses

S. S. Hoseini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the importance of mixing in the chemical industry and proposes a computational framework for optimizing power consumption and impeller stress in stirred-tank reactors. By using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis, the study examines three types of impellers and utilizes Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) to optimize the geometrical parameters of the blades. The results show a decrease in power consumption with V- and U-shape impellers compared to the 6-blade Rushton turbine, and indicate differences in turbulent kinetic energy and stress distribution among different impeller designs.

Ammonia oxidation regimes and transitional behaviors in a Jet Stirred Flow Reactor

Maria Virginia Manna et al.

Summary: This study experimentally identified combustion regimes for NH3/O2 mixtures diluted in N2 and found a transition from low temperature combustion to high temperature combustion at 1300K. Kinetic analyses suggest that NH2 oxidation routes play a key role in determining different combustion regimes.

Bubbles size and mass transfer in a pulsating flow type apparatus with gas-liquid mixture

R. Sh. Abiev et al.

Summary: The study shows that the size of gas bubbles is influenced by various mechanisms, and there is a dependence between energy dissipation rate and bubble size. It is recommended that PFA be used as an alternative to traditional reactors, especially for fast and ultrafast reactions as well as processes requiring long residence time.

Scalar mixing in a Kelvin-Helmholtz shear layer and implications for Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes modeling of mixing layers

Brandon E. Morgan

Summary: This study involves large-eddy simulations of a Kelvin-Helmholtz mixing layer, showing similarities in scalar variance integral behavior with a Rayleigh-Taylor mixing layer and a tendency towards mixedness of about 0.8 in the simulated KH shear layer. It is found that using a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model calibrated for an RT layer to simulate a KH layer results in significant overprediction of scalar variance, suggesting the addition of a buoyancy production term to match mixedness in simulations of both RT and KH layers with a single model calibration.
