By selecting different geometries of multibrominated monomers, four triphenylpyridine-based CMPs were synthesized with controlled electron enrichment, porosities, and optoelectronic properties. Among them, TPP-Py CMP exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation, with high surface area, thermal stability, hydrogen production rate, and quantum yield.

A general strategy of bandgap engineering in the same series of materials was proposed to obtain excellent solid photocatalysts. By modulating the bandgaps, energy levels, and photoelectric performances of CMPs with benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b0:5,6-b00]trithiophene building blocks, the visible-light catalytic activity of BTT-CMP2 was found to be superior and showed extensive substrate applicability and outstanding recyclability.
