Direct imaging of atomistic grain boundary migration

Jiake Wei et al.

Summary: Grain boundary migration in polycrystalline materials is crucial in modifying microstructures and properties, governed by the atomistic mechanism. Experimental findings show that the migration proceeds through cooperative shuffling of atoms along low-energy structures.

Deciphering the interactions between single arm dislocation sources and coherent twin boundary in nickel bi-crystal

Vahid Samaee et al.

Summary: In-situ transmission electron microscopy observations in nickel bi-crystal samples provide insights into the formation of constriction nodes at coherent twin boundaries (CTBs) by the absorption of curved screw dislocations, leading to a unique CTB sliding mechanism involving coordinated twinning dislocation pairs. The interactions between non-screw dislocations and CTBs highlight the importance of the synergy between the repulsive force of CTBs and the back stress from single arm dislocation sources (SASs) in small volumes. The findings contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms controlling the strength and ductility of metals at coherent twin boundaries.

A crystal plasticity investigation of grain size-texture interaction in magnesium alloys

Babak Ravaji et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure-property linkages in magnesium by focusing on the interaction effects between grain size, texture, and loading orientation. The findings suggest that grain size refinement reduces extension twinning, and both grain refinement and textural weakening can decrease plastic anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry. The study offers insight into the roles of texture and grain size in the damage behavior of engineered magnesium microstructures.

The role of grain boundary mobility in diffusional deformation

Francis Delannay

Summary: This study revisits the diffusional deformation model by considering the dependence of diffusion potential on grain boundary curvature. It analyzes the dynamic induction of grain boundary curvature by strain rate and its relationship with diffusion fluxes across grain boundaries. The dissipation contribution due to curvature in conditions of Nabarro-Herring creep is found to be larger and closely related to the square of grain size.
