Interfacial compliance, energy dissipation, frequency effects, and long-term fretting corrosion performance of Ti-6Al-4V/CoCrMo interfaces

Summary: Fretting corrosion in modular orthopedic implants can be reduced by using high-compliance interfaces, as shown in this study evaluating the interfaces under long-term conditions using a pin-on-disk fretting corrosion test apparatus. High-compliance pins experienced minimal fretting and surface damage compared to control pins, indicating the potential of reducing implant degradation and damage through geometric modifications.

Self-reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) and polyethylene composite gaskets for prevention of mechanically-assisted corrosion in modular taper junctions: Seating, micromotion and short-term fretting corrosion

Eric S. Ouellette et al.

Summary: The study characterized the short-term performance of SRC-PEEK and SRC-PE films in hip replacement devices, showing that SRC-PEEK had advantages in frictional locking and preventing MACC. SRC-PE films, due to their low friction properties, may lead to improper head seating or head disassociation.
