Strong tough hydrogels via the synergy of freeze-casting and salting out

Mutian Hua et al.

Summary: A strategy combining freeze-casting and salting-out treatments produces poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels with a multi-length-scale hierarchical architecture, including micrometre-scale honeycomb-like pore walls and interconnected nanofibril meshes. These hydrogels have properties that compare favorably to other tough hydrogels and even natural tendons.

Scaling behavior of stiffness and strength of hierarchical network nanomaterials

Shan Shi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the preparation of macroscopic hierarchical network nanomaterials through the self-organization processes of dealloying, which provide enhanced strength and stiffness at a given solid fraction, and allow for reduced solid fractions. The scaling laws for mechanics and atomistic simulation support these observations, indicating the systematic benefits of hierarchical structuring in nanoscale network structures. These materials may serve as prototypes for future lightweight structural materials.
