Oxidation resistance, residual strength, and microstructural evolution in Al2O3-MgO?C refractory composites with YAG nanopowder

K. Sarath Chandra et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of nanostructured YAG powder in Al2O3-MgO?C refractory composites, and found that the addition of nano-YAG significantly improved oxidation resistance, residual strength, and thermal shock resistance in the materials. This improvement was mainly attributed to the well-sintered framework of YAG/Spinel bonding grains formed in the dense oxidized layer microstructure of the refractories.

Structural properties of Al2O3-MgO-C refractory composites improved with YAG nanoparticle hybridized expandable graphite

K. Sarath Chandra et al.

Summary: The structural properties of Al2O3-MgO-C refractories were significantly improved by adding YAG nanoparticle hybridized expandable graphite (EG), resulting in a well-sintered framework of EG embedded polyhedral YAG grains throughout the matrix microstructure. This led to enhancements in strength, toughness, and Weibull modulus compared to conventional graphite compositions, with proposed mechanisms for microstructure evaluation and toughening in these refractory composites.

Recycled magnesia-carbon aggregate as the component of new type of MgO-C refractories

Maciej Ludwig et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of MgO-C scrap in new basic products without the need for a carbon removal step, finding that adding recycled aggregates did not worsen the properties of the materials. The optimal content of recycled raw material was determined to be 30%.

Synthesis of 3C-silicon carbide 1D structures by carbothermal reduction process

Mula Raju et al.

Summary: Cubic 3C-silicon carbide 1D-structures were successfully synthesized at different temperatures, showing ribbon-type and rod-type morphologies. The growth direction of [111] was confirmed, and the growth mechanisms of the two distinct morphologies were discussed. Raman spectroscopy indicated a red shift in the peaks of the grown SiC structures, attributed to confinement effect, internal stresses, and stacking faults.
