The LiNiO2 Cathode Active Material: A Comprehensive Study of Calcination Conditions and their Correlation with Physicochemical Properties Part II. Morphology

Felix Riewald et al.

Summary: A better understanding of the cathode active material (CAM) is crucial for improving lithium-ion batteries. This study focuses on the structural properties of LiNiO2 (LNO) and its correlation to battery performance. The morphology of LNO is found to be the decisive factor, rather than the deviation from the ideal stoichiometry. The changes in particle morphology during battery operation affect the surface area in contact with the electrolyte, which determines the 1st cycle capacity loss and long-term cycling behavior. Automated SEM image segmentation is used to analyze the primary particle size, and an in situ capacitance method measures the interface area between CAM and electrolyte.

The LiNiO2 Cathode Active Material: A Comprehensive Study of Calcination Conditions and their Correlation with Physicochemical Properties. Part I. Structural Chemistry

Philipp Kurzhals et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlations between physicochemical parameters and electrochemical performance of LiNiO2 (LNO) cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It was found that the number of Li equivalents per Ni is the determining factor concerning the final stoichiometry, and the Ni excess showed no correlation to the 1st cycle capacity loss. Additionally, the primary particle morphology of LNO was identified as an overlooked physical property that needs to be considered.

Synthesis of Co-Free Ni-Rich Single Crystal Positive Electrode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries: Part II. One-Step Lithiation Method of Mg-Doped LiNiO2

Aaron Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synthesis of Co-free single crystalline Mg-doped LNO via a one-step lithiation method, with results indicating that increasing the Li/TM ratio at lower temperatures does not affect grain growth but impacts the formation of Li2O impurity. While single crystalline materials still lag behind polycrystalline materials in cycling performance, controlling the Ni content can result in larger grains in the material.

Summary: Through operando X-ray diffraction and Monte Carlo simulations, combined with Density Functional Theory, discrepancies between experiments and theory in the LiNiO2 phase diagram have been successfully resolved. Off-stoichiometry and elemental substitution play a crucial role in disrupting Li ordering, suppressing phase transitions, and promoting solid-solution behavior and smooth discharge curves.
