Too Many Streams and Not Enough Time or Money? Analytical Depletion Functions for Streamflow Depletion Estimates

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Groundwater pumping can lead to streamflow depletion by reducing groundwater discharge or inducing surface water infiltration. Analytical and numerical models are commonly used to predict streamflow depletion, with analytical depletion functions (ADFs) offering a balance between the ease of implementation of analytical models and the robustness of numerical models. ADFs show better agreement with numerical models and represent complex stream geometries well, making them a valuable tool for preliminary screening of groundwater pumping impacts on streamflow and environmental flow needs.

Extending the Capture Map Concept to Estimate Discrete and Risk-Based Streamflow Depletion Potential

Jeremy T. White et al.

Summary: Numerical groundwater models are commonly used to estimate the impact of groundwater extraction on surface-water/groundwater exchange, with capture maps being an effective way to summarize this relationship. However, capture maps are deterministic and do not account for uncertainty in the model, nor do they facilitate analysis of different extraction locations and reaches. By introducing the concept of a response matrix and risk shifting, capture maps and streamflow depletion potential can be placed in a stochastic, risk-based framework.

Comparing Streamflow Depletion Estimation Approaches in a Heavily Stressed, Conjunctively Managed Aquifer

Samuel C. Zipper et al.

Summary: Comparing eight different analytical depletion functions with a calibrated MODFLOW numerical model for estimating streamflow depletion, the study finds strong agreement between the analytical functions and the model, with lower estimates for wells near surface water features in high transmissivity settings. Hydrostratigraphic parameters strongly influence agreement between modeling approaches, highlighting the importance of accurate subsurface data. Additionally, the agreement between methods is not sensitive to pumping rate, confirming a key assumption of analytical models.

Sequential Data Assimilation for Streamflow Forecasting: Assessing the Sensitivity to Uncertainties and Updated Variables of a Conceptual Hydrological Model at Basin Scale

G. Piazzi et al.

Summary: Skillful streamflow forecasts are crucial for water-related applications, with a growing emphasis on improving initial condition estimates through data assimilation. This study assesses the sensitivity of DA-based IC estimation to various uncertainties and model updates over 232 watersheds in France. The comparison of two ensemble-based techniques shows that accurate routing store estimates benefit the DA-based IC estimation, with the EnKF outperforming the PF in forecasting meteorological uncertainty.

Significant Baseflow Reduction in the Sao Francisco River Basin

Murilo Cesar Lucas et al.

Summary: Research in Brazil's Sao Francisco River Basin shows that water scarcity issues are mainly caused by decreasing groundwater contributions, particularly in the Middle SFB region. Despite no significant trends in precipitation, the strong correlation between decreasing terrestrial water storage and groundwater flow reduction is evident.

Summary: Computer models play a crucial role in informing decision-making in water resource management. However, quantifying uncertainty and implementing high-dimensional, stochastic workflows can be challenging, requiring a deep understanding of advanced topics. The introduction of scripting tools can facilitate the efficient construction of high-dimensional, geostatistical-based PEST interfaces, providing low-cost access to valuable decision support analyses.

Risk-Based Decision-Support Groundwater Modeling for the Lower San Antonio River Basin, Texas, USA

Linzy K. Foster et al.

Summary: A numerical surface-water/groundwater model was developed to evaluate responses of low base flows and groundwater levels in the lower San Antonio River Basin under conditions of reduced recharge and increased groundwater withdrawals. Results suggest that groundwater contributions to surface water during low flow periods may decrease from 6% to 25% over an 8-year planning period, with a corresponding reduction in recharge and increase in groundwater pumping.

What Role Does Hydrological Science Play in the Age of Machine Learning?

Grey S. Nearing et al.

Summary: This paper is derived from a keynote talk given at Google's 2020 Flood Forecasting Meets Machine Learning Workshop. Recent experiments applying deep learning to rainfall-runoff simulation show that there is more information in large-scale hydrological data sets than previously thought. The paper calls for the hydrology community to focus on developing a quantitative understanding of the value of hydrological process understanding in a modeling discipline increasingly dominated by machine learning.

Summary: The study investigated trends and drivers of intermittency signatures of non-perennial streams across the United States, revealing that half of the gages showed significant trends in at least one signature during a specific time period, with changes in no-flow duration being the most common. Regional patterns of change showed widespread drying in the southern US and wetting in the north.

Summary: The text discusses the false assumptions of stationarity in natural systems and the challenges it poses for planning and policy making. It also highlights the issues faced in managing resilience and presents four pathways for addressing nonstationary systems. Effectively dealing with nonstationarity within legal and management systems is crucial for the intertwined future of people and nature.
