Framework for Integrating Equity Into Machine Learning Models A Case Study

Juan C. Rojas et al.

Summary: Predictive analytic models powered by machine learning are increasingly important in healthcare organizations, but they can be biased and harmful. We propose a strategy to evaluate and mitigate biases in these models, ensuring their safe and effective use in healthcare.

Evaluation of domain generalization and adaptation on improving model robustness to temporal dataset shift in clinical medicine

Lin Lawrence Guo et al.

Summary: Temporal dataset shift associated with changes in healthcare poses a challenge for deploying machine learning-based clinical decision support systems. Algorithms like domain generalization and unsupervised domain adaptation may help mitigate the impact of dataset shift. However, in this study, DG and UDA failed to produce more robust models compared to ERM when dealing with temporal dataset shift in clinical prediction tasks. Further research is needed to find alternative approaches for maintaining model performance over time in clinical medicine.

Addressing bias in prediction models by improving subpopulation calibration

Noam Barda et al.

Summary: This study illustrates the issue of subpopulation miscalibration and validates the effectiveness of an adapted algorithm for recalibration of predictive models. By applying the algorithm, significant improvements were seen in subpopulation calibration statistics, ultimately reducing bias and increasing fairness and equality in predictive modeling.

Comparing the Predictive Effects of Patient Medication Adherence Indices in Electronic Health Record and Claims-Based Risk Stratification Models

Hadi Kharrazi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the value of medication adherence indices in improving predictive models of cost and hospitalization, finding that adding these indices to demographic and morbidity models significantly enhanced the forecasting of next-year hospitalization. However, the effects were attenuated for advanced diagnosis-based models.

Comparative Access to and Use of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis Screening by Women's Race/Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status

Christoph Lee et al.

Summary: In this cross-sectional study, women of minority race/ethnicity and lower socioeconomic status experienced lower DBT access during the early adoption period and persistently lower DBT use when available over time. Future efforts should address racial/ethnic, educational, and financial barriers to DBT screening.

Application of machine learning in predicting hospital readmissions: a scoping review of the literature

Yinan Huang et al.

Summary: This review evaluated the performance of machine learning methods for predicting hospital readmission in the US, with a focus on commonly used algorithms such as tree-based methods, neural networks, regularized logistic regression, and support vector machines. Most of the studies reviewed were of high quality, and the majority reported ML algorithms with an AUC above 0.70. Further research is needed to compare the performance of different ML algorithms for hospital readmission prediction.

Summary: With the widespread use of AI systems in everyday life, fairness in design has become crucial. Researchers have developed methods to address biases in different subdomains and established a taxonomy for fairness definitions. Existing work shows biases in AI applications, and researchers are working on solutions to mitigate these problems.
