Preparedness for Serious Illnesses: Impact of Ethnicity, Mistrust, Perceived Discrimination, and Health Communication

Mohsen Bazargan et al.

Summary: The study found that a significant proportion of adults from different racial and ethnic backgrounds feel unprepared for worsening medical conditions, with healthcare providers often failing to address their emotional needs. Race/ethnicity was associated with preparedness for serious illness, but factors such as medical mistrust, perceived discrimination, poor communication with providers, and lower self-rated health quality were found to be more significant predictors. Healthcare systems and primary care providers should focus on improving discussions and education on serious illness preparedness to enhance quality of care for patients and their families.
