A systematic review on focal takotsubo syndrome: a not-so-small matter

Giacomo Tini et al.

Summary: The focal contraction pattern in takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is considered rare but may be more prevalent than currently reported. This comprehensive systematic literature review analyzed clinical characteristics of 166 focal TTS patients and found that the age of onset, gender distribution, and trigger factors were similar to typical TTS. However, the focal variant was characterized by distinct electrocardiographic changes and had a better prognosis.

Effect of Gender on Prognosis in Patients With Takotsubo Syndrome (from a Nationwide Perspective)

Louis T. Vincent et al.

Summary: Despite Takotsubo syndrome predominantly affecting postmenopausal women, men with the condition have shown higher mortality risks. This study found that male patients with TTS were younger, more likely to have comorbidities, and experienced more severe complications and higher mortality rates during hospitalization. The research also revealed that male TTS patients had a higher burden of co-morbidities, leading to increased risks of cardiogenic shock and mortality compared to their female counterparts.

Pathophysiology of Takotsubo syndrome - a joint scientific statement from the Heart Failure Association Takotsubo Syndrome Study Group and Myocardial Function Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology - Part 2: vascular pathophysiology, gender and sex hormones, genetics, chronic cardiovascular problems and clinical implications

Elmir Omerovic et al.

Summary: The scientific statement on the pathophysiology of Takotsubo syndrome discusses various aspects including catecholamines, the sympathetic nervous system, vascular responses, the role of the nervous systems, gender differences, sex hormones, genetics, and chronic abnormalities of cardiovascular physiology in survivors. The limitations of current clinical and preclinical studies, implications for clinical management, and future research perspectives are also highlighted.

Examination of gender differences in patients with takotsubo syndrome according to left ventricular biopsy: two case reports

Tsutomu Murakami et al.

Summary: This study identified differences in myocardial stress responses between male and female patients with Takotsubo syndrome using pathological examination and DNA analysis. Particularly, it may aid in treating acute severity in male patients. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to support data reliability and elucidate the development mechanism of Takotsubo syndrome.
