The Crystal Plane is not the Key Factor for CO2-to-Methane Electrosynthesis on Reconstructed Cu2O Microparticles

Bangwei Deng et al.

Summary: The Cu2O/Cu interface plays a key role in determining the selectivity of methane formation, rather than the initial crystal plane of reconstructed Cu2O microparticles. Experimental results show that methane evolution is dominated on all crystal planes with similar Tafel slopes and long-term stabilities.

Tuning mobility of intermediate and electron transfer to enhance electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia on Cu2O/Cu interface

Wenyang Fu et al.

Summary: Compared to traditional haber-bosch process for synthetic ammonia, electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (ERNA) offers a promising and sustainable technology to generate ammonia at ambient temperature. A Cu based electrode with Cu2O/Cu interface was prepared and achieved high performance for reducing nitrate to ammonia. The Cu2O/Cu interface improved the adsorption energy of NO2- and electron transfer to NO3-, enhancing the efficiency and rate of ERNA.

Vanadium Hydride as an Ammonia Synthesis Catalyst

Yu Cao et al.

Summary: Early transition metals V and Nb show enhanced catalytic activity through hydride diffusion due to their body-centered cubic (bcc) related structures and relatively lower M-N bond strengths. The activity of vanadium hydride surpasses previously reported hydrogenated titanium and is comparable to TiH2 and Cs-Ru/MgO at 400°C under 5 MPa. These findings suggest potential for developing new single-phase hydride catalysts for previously overlooked elements without compromising activity levels.

Tunable Product Selectivity in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction on Well-Mixed Ni-Cu Alloys

Hakhyeon Song et al.

Summary: This study presents random solid solution Cu1-xNix alloy catalysts that enable tunability of product selectivity for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Increasing the Ni content in these catalysts leads to higher hydrogen evolution and significantly increases the selectivity for methane formation, which can help enhance industrial competitiveness.

Electronic Origin of Catalytic Activity of TiH2 for Ammonia Synthesis

Yuta Tsuji et al.

Summary: Transition metals like titanium can easily form nitrides and hydrides on the surface, but not ammonia synthesis due to high Fermi level. However, the Fermi level of titanium hydride (TiH2) allows it to act as an effective catalyst for ammonia synthesis under specific conditions. The presence of nitrides on the TiH2 surface reduces the activation barrier for N-H bond formation by oxidizing nearby titanium atoms, leading to good agreement between theory and experiment.

A single-site iron catalyst with preoccupied active centers that achieves selective ammonia electrosynthesis from nitrate

Panpan Li et al.

Summary: The necessity for sustainable ammonia production using economic and environment-friendly technologies is increasing globally. This study presents an iron-based single-atom catalyst with uniform atomic dispersion on carbon, which exhibits high NH3 yield rate and faradaic efficiency. The catalyst's high selectivity for NH3 is attributed to the unique electronic structures of the individual Fe sites.
