Fossil hymenosomatid crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda) from the Lower Cretaceous of NE Brazil

Ighor Dienes Mendes et al.

Summary: This study describes fossil materials of Hymenosomatidae from the Upper Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, northeastern Brazil. It includes a new subfamily, two new genera, and three new species. These findings provide new evidence for the evolutionary history and distribution of Hymenosomatidae in the Mesozoic.

A fish-parasitic isopod (Cymothoidae) on the pachyrhizodont Goulmimichthys roberti from the lower Turonian (Upper Cretaceous) Vallecillo plattenkalk, NE Mexico

Eva S. Stinnesbeck et al.

Summary: The Vallecillo platy limestone deposit in northeastern Mexico is known for its well preserved and diverse fish and marine reptilian assemblage from the early-middle Turonian. A specimen of the pachyrhizodont G. roberti revealed the first Cretaceous isopod attached to a fish host. The morphology of the specimen suggests a parasitic lifestyle for the isopod, which is further supported by the anoxic bottom conditions at the Vallecillo deposit.

A new genus and species of sphaeromatid (Crustacea: Isopoda) from the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian) Sierra Madre Formation, Chiapas, Mexico

Francisco J. Vega et al.

Summary: A new isopod species, Chiapasphaera cretacea Vega and Bruce gen. et sp. nov., has been discovered in the dolomitic laminar plattenkalk deposits of the Aptian Sierra Madre Formation at El Espinal quarries in Chiapas, Mexico. This new species resembles the extant genus Gnorimosphaeroma, but with distinct differences in having five visible pleonites, leading to the establishment of a new genus and species. Despite limited preservation of appendages, important taxonomic features can still be discerned from the clear details of the pereon, pleon, pleotelson, and uropods.

New Cretaceous crabs (Crustacea, Brachyura) from Moscow Oblast and Dagestan (Russia): patterns in phylogeny and morphospace of the oldest eubrachyurans (Dorippoidea)

Barry W. M. van Bakel et al.

Summary: Four new brachyuran species from Lower and Upper Cretaceous strata of Moscow Oblast and Dagestan, Russia, are described, including the earliest known eubrachyuran crab, Personadorippe levashiensis gen. et sp. nov. These discoveries provide important insights into the evolutionary history of primitive crabs and their taxonomic placements.

Ammonites from the La Negra Facies (El Doctor Formation, late Albian) of the Muhi Quarry, Hidalgo, central Mexico

Isabel Lopez-Palomino et al.

Summary: The fossil-rich limestones in the Muhi Quarry of northwestern State of Hidalgo, Mexico are dated to the late Albian age and suggest the presence of various zones in North America. The El Doctor Formation contains the oldest teleostean aulopiforms and acanthomorphs in the world, with the oldest records of chondrichthyans and teleostean Tselfatiiformes in Mexico.

New species of Thylacocephala, Eodollocaris keithflinti n. gene, n. sp., from the Mazon Creek Lagerstatte, Illinois, United States (c. 307 Ma) and redescription of other Mazon Creek thylacocephalans

Thomas Laville et al.

Summary: Thylacocephala is a mysterious group of Euarthropoda characterized by a folded shield enveloping the body, large compound eyes, large raptorial appendages, and swimming appendages. This study focuses on Thylacocephalans from the Mazon Creek Lagerstatte, describing a new species and providing new details of known species' appendages and trunks. These findings help improve understanding of the possible lifestyles of Thylacocephala representatives.

Crab in amber reveals an early colonization of nonmarine environments during the Cretaceous

Javier Luque et al.

Summary: Amber fossils provide valuable insights into the anatomy, biology, and ecology of extinct organisms. In this study, the first record of true crabs in amber from the Cretaceous of Myanmar is presented, shedding light on the evolutionary history of crabs and providing a calibration point for molecular divergence time estimates. The fossil, with its well-preserved features, bridges the gap between molecular divergence predictions and the fossil record, providing important information on the evolutionary timeline of higher crown eubrachyurans.
