An effective impedance for modelling the aeroacoustic coupling of ducts connected via apertures

Alessandro Orchini

Summary: This study derives an effective impedance that models the aeroacoustic coupling between periodic arrays of ducts communicating via apertures, which can simplify theoretical and computational analysis of the dynamics of these arrays. The derived impedance embeds new features and dependencies on parameters such as the grazing flow Mach number and aperture extension.

Influence of rotational asymmetry on thermoacoustic instabilities in a can-annular lean-premixed combustor

Kihun Moon et al.

Summary: Low-frequency combustion instabilities in can-annular gas turbine systems are driven by acoustic interactions between adjacent combustors, leading to pressure oscillations in various patterns and frequencies. Rotational asymmetry can result in different dynamic states, such as pairwise push-pull modes and spinning azimuthal instabilities, which are not present under rotationally symmetric conditions.

Analysis of Thermoacoustic Modes in Can-Annular Combustors Using Effective Bloch-Type Boundary Conditions

Jakob G. R. von Saldern et al.

Summary: In this study, a coupling condition based on Rayleigh conductivity and acoustic flux conservation is derived to enable acoustic communication between adjacent cans, reducing the size of the thermoacoustic problem by a factor of N. The effects of coupling strength on a generic can-annular combustor consisting of 12 identical cans are investigated in the frequency domain. Eigenvalue clusters with close frequency and growth rate, but different mode shapes, are discussed.

Whistling of deep cavities subject to turbulent grazing flow: intermittently unstable aeroacoustic feedback

Claire Bourquard et al.

Summary: This work revisited the aeroacoustic instability occurring in deep cavities subject to a low-Mach grazing flow experimentally and theoretically, constructing a new theoretical model and successfully modeling intermittency observed near the supercritical Hopf bifurcations. The results from systematic experiments and analyses also identified the necessary conditions for intermittently stable or intermittently unstable intervals in such systems.

Modeling the nonlinear aeroacoustic response of a harmonically forced side branch aperture under turbulent grazing flow

Tiemo Pedergnana et al.

Summary: This study introduces two physics-based models describing the nonlinear aeroacoustic response of a side branch aperture under harmonic forcing with variable acoustic pressure amplitude. These models are validated with experimental data and provide a quantitative description for controlling aeroacoustic instabilities.

The effect of hydrogen addition on the amplitude and harmonic response of azimuthal instabilities in a pressurized annular combustor

Thomas Indlekofer et al.

Summary: This study introduces an annular combustion chamber operated at intermediate pressures with CH4-H2 blends, leading to various combustion instabilities. Higher hydrogen content can result in high-amplitude instabilities with significant pressure amplitude contributions, including higher order harmonics. The harmonic response is amplitude dependent with a quadratic relationship between harmonic components of pressure amplitudes.

A Non-Compact Effective Impedance Model for Can-to-Can Acoustic Communication: Analysis and Optimization of Damping Mechanisms

Jakob G. R. von Saldern et al.

Summary: The study focuses on modeling the acoustic communication between adjacent cans in can-annular combustors, considering the effects of density fluctuations, mean flow, and dissipative effects. It proposes the installation of a liner just upstream of the first turbine stage to damp azimuthal instabilities. By using a proposed can-to-can coupling model, the study discusses in detail the impact of liner impedance on effective reflection coefficients for different Bloch wavenumbers.
