Glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium, herbicides commonly used on genetically modified crops, and their interaction with microplastics: Ecotoxicity in anuran tadpoles

Rafael C. Lajmanovich et al.

Summary: The study found that glyphosate (GLY) and glufosinate ammonium (GA) herbicides, when used alone or in combination with polyethylene microplastic particles (PEMPs), have an impact on the toxicity of Scinax squalirostris tadpoles, with the combination increasing toxicity effects. Exposure to GLY and GA herbicides alone, as well as in combination with PEMPs, affects enzyme activities and leads to an increase in GST, and a decrease in AChE and CbE.

Herbicides glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium negatively affect human sperm mitochondria respiration efficiency

Alessandra Ferramosca et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of glyphosate (GLY) and glufosinate ammonium (GA) on human sperm mitochondrial respiration efficiency, in relation to sex steroids and the hormone-like flavonoid quercetin. Results show that di-hydroxytestosterone (DHT) and quercetin can reduce mitochondrial functionality while GLY and GA negatively impact mitochondrial respiration efficiency. Additionally, DHT, quercetin, and GA target mitochondria through a mechanism different from GLY.

Earthworm casts restrained the accumulation and phytotoxicity of soil glyphosate to cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) plants

Lei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that earthworm casts facilitate the desorption of glyphosate from soil, enhancing its bioaccessibility but reducing its accumulation in cowpea plants. By decreasing the residue pool of glyphosate in soil, earthworm casts helped plants reverse glyphosate-induced growth suppression.
