Why could sleep medicine never do without polysomnography?

Christophe Gauld et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the central role of polysomnography in the field of sleep medicine, not only providing scientific data but also representing an obligatory passage point (OPP) that crystallizes debates, integrates data, and facilitates common language, strengthening the discipline of sleep medicine.

A novel EEG marker predicts perceived sleepiness and poor sleep quality

Bastien Lechat et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate if a novel EEG-derived metric, the odds ratio product (ORP), can predict self-reported daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality. The results showed that high ORP values were associated with poor sleep quality and a decrease in excessive daytime sleepiness.

Bidirectional relationships of comorbidity with obstructive sleep apnoea

Margaret Gleeson et al.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is often associated with various comorbidities, including metabolic, cardiovascular, renal, pulmonary, and neuropsychiatric conditions. There is evidence to suggest a bidirectional relationship between OSA and comorbidity, with some comorbidities possibly predisposing to the development of OSA. The impact of therapy in bidirectional relationships is also reviewed, emphasizing the importance of accurate diagnosis.

Effect of CPAP Therapy on Kidney Function in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Alex N. Rimke et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether CPAP treatment could improve kidney function in CKD patients with coexisting OSA. The results showed no significant difference in eGFR and ACR between CPAP and usual care over 12 months, although there was some indication that CPAP may slow the decline in eGFR in CKD patients with a lower risk of progression. Further larger clinical trials are needed to explore the effects of CPAP on kidney function.

New frontiers in pharmacologic obstructive sleep apnea treatment: A narrative review

Sonja G. Schutz et al.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that can have adverse cardiovascular outcomes if left untreated. Positive airway pressure (PAP) is the first-line treatment, but its impact on cardiovascular consequences remains controversial. Medications have been tested as alternative treatment options, but their effectiveness is still debated.

Intensity of Respiratory Cortical Arousals Is a Distinct Pathophysiologic Feature and Is Associated with Disease Severity in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients

Katharina Bahr et al.

Summary: The study investigated the correlation between respiratory arousal characteristics on EEG recordings and disease severity in obstructive sleep apnea patients. Results showed strong positive correlations between respiratory arousal intensity and various severity indices, indicating individual patterns of arousal characteristics in each patient. Arousal intensity was found to be significantly higher in hypopneic events compared to apneic events.

Non-dipping nocturnal blood pressure correlates with obstructive sleep apnoea severity in normotensive subjects and may reverse with therapy

Sophie J. Crinion et al.

Summary: In a normotensive cohort, the severity of OSA was associated with higher nocturnal blood pressure, and intermittent hypoxia was the most important OSA-related factor in this relationship. CPAP therapy decreased night-time systolic blood pressure and increased mean nocturnal blood pressure dip in treated patients.
