A new parameter free partially penalized immersed finite element and the optimal convergence analysis

Haifeng Ji et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new parameter-free partially penalized immersed finite element method and convergence analysis for solving second-order elliptic interface problems. The method introduces a lifting operator on interface edges to ensure coercivity without requiring an ad-hoc stabilization parameter. The optimal approximation capabilities of the immersed finite element space are proved using a novel approach. A new trace inequality is established on interface elements to prove optimal convergence. The method and analysis are extended to variable coefficients and three-dimensional problems. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical analysis and efficiency of the new method.

A virtual finite element method for two-dimensional Maxwell interface problems with a background unfitted mesh

Shuhao Cao et al.

Summary: A virtual element method (VEM) with first-order optimal convergence has been developed for solving two-dimensional Maxwell interface problems on a special class of polygonal meshes. The method introduces a novel virtual space on a virtual triangulation of the polygonal mesh, which shares the same degrees of freedom as the usual H(curl)-conforming virtual space and proves that the optimal error bounds are independent of high aspect ratios of the anisotropic polygonal mesh near the interface.
