A rechargeable zinc-air battery based on zinc peroxide chemistry

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: The study presents a zinc-O-2/zinc peroxide chemistry that operates through a 2e(-)/O-2 process in nonalkaline aqueous electrolytes, allowing highly reversible redox reactions in zinc-air batteries. This innovative ZnO2 chemistry, enabled by water-poor and zinc ion (Zn2+)-rich inner Helmholtz layer, shows superior reversibility and stability compared to alkaline zinc-air batteries.

A molecular-level strategy to boost the mass transport of perovskite electrocatalyst for enhanced oxygen evolution

Sixuan She et al.

Summary: This study enhances the mass transport behavior of perovskite electrocatalysts by simultaneously modulating the ordered pores on oxygen-deficient sites and sulfur (S) substitution on oxygen sites at the molecular level, leading to improved mass activity. Experimental results demonstrate that this strategy can facilitate the transfer of reactive hydroxyl ions (OH-) and enhance the rate of oxygen evolution.

A novel structural design of air cathodes expanding three-phase reaction interfaces for zinc-air batteries

Lyuming Pan et al.

Summary: A novel structural design for air cathodes in zinc-air batteries has been proposed to improve discharge power. By introducing gradient hydrophobicity distribution and multiple current collectors, the three-phase reaction interfaces have been expanded from 2D plane to 3D zone, resulting in increased power density of the battery.

Fabrication of Single-Phase Manganese Oxide Films by Metal-Organic Decomposition

Kyung-Hwan Kim et al.

Summary: Single-phase Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 films were successfully fabricated using a solution process, with the calcination atmosphere playing a significant role in controlling the valence of the films. The crystallinity of the films was improved with increasing calcination temperature.

Tunable hydrophilicity in a surface nano-textured stainless steel thin film deposited by DC magnetron sputtering

Pakman Yiu et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of stainless steel thin films were fabricated by DC power magnetron sputtering at various argon working pressures. The films exhibited a single phase, body-centered cubic ferrite crystal structure, with a textured surface morphology composed of nano-sized pyramids at pressures of 6 mTorr and above. As the argon pressure increased, the microstructural evolution from dense, fibrous grains to coarse tapered grains was observed, leading to a significant reduction in static water contact angle.

Real-time monitoring of electrochemical carbon corrosion in alkaline media

Sang Gu Ji et al.

Summary: Carbon materials are commonly used as supporting substrates for electrocatalysis due to their high conductivity and chemical inertness. Understanding and preventing corrosion are crucial for long-lasting electrocatalysis. Real-time monitoring of CO2 evolution by DEMS provides valuable information about carbon corrosion, and using CO as a corrosion marker allows successful monitoring of corrosion in both acidic and alkaline media. Corrosion in alkaline media is qualitatively similar to that in acidic media but is quantitatively alleviated.

Applications of Atomically Dispersed Oxygen Reduction Catalysts in Fuel Cells and Zinc-Air Batteries

Qiaoqiao Zhang et al.

Summary: Due to energy crisis and environmental concerns, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted attention for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in fuel cells and Zn-air batteries. The research focuses on transition-metal-based electrocatalysts and explores synthesis, characterization, ORR mechanisms, and performance evaluations in different types of electrochemical devices. Challenges and future directions for SACs in fuel cells and Zn-air batteries are also discussed.
