Steviol glycoside content and essential oil profiles of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni in response to NaCl and polyethylene glycol as inducers of salinity and drought stress in vitro

T. P. Magangana et al.

Summary: Plants exhibit phenotypic plasticity under different environmental conditions, with the ability to produce more secondary metabolites when microenvironmental conditions are manipulated. However, responses may be dependent on species, cultivar, and genotype. In this study, in vitro plants of S. rebaudiana Bertoni were subjected to salt and drought stress, resulting in poor growth and development and reduced levels of key steviol glycosides. Additionally, the essential oil chemistry of the plants was significantly altered under stress conditions, highlighting the potential negative impact of environmental stresses on the bioactive aromatic compounds of the plants.

Exogenous Melatonin mediates the regulation of endogenous nitric oxide in Glycine max L. to reduce effects of drought stress

Muhammad Imran et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that both melatonin (MT) and nitric oxide (NO) can alleviate the growth inhibition of soybean caused by drought stress, by enhancing plant biomass, photosynthesis efficiency, and water content, while reducing reactive oxygen species accumulation. The treatments with MT and NO also increased antioxidant enzyme activities, reduced lipid peroxidation, and regulated the synthesis of the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) during drought stress. Moreover, the study found that the combination of MT and NO led to improved drought stress tolerance in soybean by triggering the downregulation of NO accumulation and increasing the expression of transcription factors.
