Field-cycling 31P and 1H NMR relaxometry studying the reorientational dynamics of glass forming organophosphates

M. Becher et al.

Summary: This study applies field-cycling P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to investigate the reorientational susceptibility of two glass formers. The results reveal different relaxation behaviors at different frequencies and demonstrate similar behavior close to the glass transition temperature. Additionally, the diffusion coefficient is compared using different techniques.

Effects of partial crystallization on the glassy slowdown of aqueous ethylene glycol solutions

Melanie Reuhl et al.

Summary: By combining differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy studies, the authors investigate the glass transition of aqueous ethylene glycol solutions and observe the effects of partial crystallization on the glassy dynamics. The study reveals different behaviors of partially frozen EG-poor solutions and fully liquid EG-rich solutions in the deeply supercooled regime, leading to a recrossing of their respective alpha-relaxation times. Moreover, through isotope-selective nuclear magnetic resonance, the authors discover the involvement of EG molecules in the nu relaxation process, which is traditionally considered a water process.

Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Viscous Liquids: Relaxation Stretching of Single-Particle Probes

M. Becher et al.

Summary: The validity of frequency-temperature superposition (FTS) for reorientation dynamics in viscous liquids is tested using spin-lattice relaxation rates probed via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). FTS is found to apply in several liquids, allowing for the generation of master curves. Susceptibility spectra from NMR are highly similar to those obtained from depolarized light scattering (DLS). The site-specific dynamics in flexible molecule liquids is found to merge upon cooling, suggesting molecules reorient essentially as a rigid entity near Tg.

Ethylene Glycol Dihedral Angle Dynamics: Relating Molecular Conformation to the Raman Spectrum of the Liquid

Aman Jindal et al.

Summary: The ethylene glycol molecule exhibits both trans and gauche geometries in the liquid state. The interpretation of the presence of the trans conformer in the Raman spectra based on inversion symmetry is questionable, as not all trans conformations possess this symmetry. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations allow for a resolution of this paradox, providing insight into the molecular conformation and dynamics in relation to the Raman spectrum of the EG molecule in the liquid state.

Molecular dynamics simulations vs field-cycling NMR relaxometry: Structural relaxation mechanisms in the glass-former glycerol revisited

M. Becher et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of field-cycling relaxometry and molecular dynamics simulations was used to investigate the rotational and translational dynamics associated with the glassy slowdown of glycerol. The results showed a high correspondence between experimental data and simulations, with slow transitions between molecular configurations observed in rotational motion and force-free hard sphere model describing the translational contribution. The time scales of rotational and translational motions exhibited an unusually large separation in both experiment and simulation.

Generic Structural Relaxation in Supercooled Liquids

Florian Pabst et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the light scattering spectra of different systems almost perfectly overlap, exhibiting a generic line shape of structural relaxation, particularly proportional to omega(-1/2) at high frequencies. In dielectric spectra, the generic behavior is only recovered for systems with low dipole moment.
