Δ-machine learning for potential energy surfaces: A PIP approach to bring a DFT-based PES to CCSD(T) level of theory

Apurba Nandi et al.

Summary: The study presents a machine learning approach to improve the accuracy of potential energy surfaces based on low-level density functional theory energies and gradients. By using a simple equation and fitting high-dimensional PESs with the permutationally invariant polynomial method, the approach is demonstrated to be effective for multiple molecules. Results show excellent agreement with benchmark results, even with a relatively small number of CCSD(T) energies used for training.

Watching a hydroperoxyalkyl radical (•QOOH) dissociate

Anne S. Hansen et al.

Summary: The prototypical hydroperoxyalkyl radical (center dot QOOH) intermediate, formed transiently in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds, was directly observed through its infrared fingerprint and energy-dependent unimolecular decay. Direct time-domain measurements of the QOOH· unimolecular dissociation rates at a wide range of energies aligned with theoretical predictions. Unimolecular decay was enhanced by heavy-atom tunneling involving O-O elongation and C-C-O angle contraction.

Effects of bending excitation on the reaction dynamics of fluorine atoms with ammonia

Li Tian et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that exciting the low-frequency umbrella bending mode of ammonia enhances its reaction with fluorine atoms more than exciting the high-frequency stretching modes. The mode-specific reaction dynamic is attributed to the increased attractive interaction between ammonia and fluorine atom, as well as the enhancement of the direct stripping reaction mediated by two submerged barriers.
