Probing surfaces and interfaces in complex oxide films via in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Suresh Thapa et al.

Summary: Emergent behavior at oxide interfaces has driven research in complex oxide films for the past 20 years. Advances in synthesis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have enabled the growth of interfaces with unique properties not found in bulk materials. The in situ integration of synthesis and spectroscopy has improved the growth process and accelerated scientific discovery, with techniques including determination of interfacial intermixing, valence band alignment, and interfacial charge transfer.

Characterization of MXenes at every step, from their precursors to single flakes and assembled films

Mikhail Shekhirev et al.

Summary: The field of MXene continues to grow as more research groups investigate this large class of 2D materials. While synthesis and applications have been widely discussed, the importance of characterization is often overlooked. This review focuses on various advanced characterization techniques for understanding the precursor suitability, successful synthesis, composition, structure, and properties of MXene.

Real-time interfacial electron dynamics revealed through temporal correlations in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Felix Brausse et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel technique for monitoring dynamics in interfacial systems through temporal correlations in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) signals. By extending an existing optical-laser pump/multiple X-ray probe setup, the method can record the kinetic energy and absolute time of arrival of every detected photoelectron. In a prototypical time-resolved XPS experiment on photoinduced surface-photovoltage dynamics in silicon, the new technique based on laboratory time produced the same result as conventional pump-probe data acquisition.
