A Review of Electrolyte Equations of State with Emphasis on Those Based on Cubic and Cubic-Plus-Association (CPA) Models

Georgios M. Kontogeorgis et al.

Summary: This article reviews the current state of electrolyte equations of state (e-EoS), highlighting the diversity of modeling approaches and the challenges in comparing different models. Electrolyte thermodynamics is a complex and important subject, but there are still unresolved fundamental issues. The review aims to provide insight into the current research status and areas that require further investigation.

Statistical theory of individual ionic activity coefficients of electrolytes with multiple - Charged ions including seawater

Werner Ebeling et al.

Summary: Based on statistical mechanics methods, this study presents analytical nonlinear extensions of the Debye-Huckel and Mean-Spherical approximations for the calculation of individual activity coefficients in electrolytic solutions. The DHX and MSX approximations generalize the results from cluster theory and can handle various effects such as cationic solvation and weak association effects in multivalent ions.

An analysis of the parameters in the Debye-Huckel theory

Li Sun et al.

Summary: The Debye-Huckel theory is a widely used method for counting electrostatic forces in thermodynamic models. This study investigates the effects of two important parameters, ion size parameters and relative static permittivity of the solution, on the theory's accuracy. Three different activity coefficient models are analyzed and compared for 14 salt systems to better understand the capabilities and limitations of the Debye-Huckel theory. The flexibility of adjusting ion size parameters and relative static permittivity in the original theory is also explored.

On the derivations of the Debye-Huckel equations

Gabriel M. Silva et al.

Summary: This work derives the basic thermodynamic properties and activity coefficients equations from the linearised Poisson-Boltzmann equation. The derivations are based on classical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, with a comparison of their differences and limitations. It demonstrates that the original derivation by Debye and Huckel contains unnecessary considerations and clarifies that the Debye and Guntelberg charging processes result in different thermodynamic properties.

ePC-SAFT advanced - Part I: Physical meaning of including a concentration-dependent dielectric constant in the born term and in the Debye-Huckel theory

Mark Buelow et al.

Summary: The transition from aqueous to non-aqueous electrolyte systems poses significant challenges in electrolyte thermodynamics. The change in dielectric constants can alter ion solvation significantly. The use of the Born term in electrolyte models has a notable impact on transferability between aqueous and non-aqueous systems.

On the modified Poisson-Boltzmann closure for primitive model electrolytes at high concentration

Christopher W. Outhwaite et al.

Summary: The modified Poisson-Boltzmann closure is applied to investigate high concentration primitive model electrolytes, resulting in derived damped oscillatory mean electrostatic potentials. The study suggests that this closure can provide a basis for understanding the large experimental decay lengths observed at high electrolyte concentrations.

Individual Ion Activity Coefficients in Aqueous Electrolytes from Explicit-Water Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Sina Hassanjani Saravi et al.

Summary: The study calculates individual ion activity coefficients in aqueous solutions through molecular dynamics simulations, showing good qualitative agreement with experimental measurements but significantly larger magnitudes. This research establishes a robust thermodynamic framework that sheds light on the behavior of individual ions and their contributions to the nonidealities of aqueous electrolyte solutions.
