Role of Intermolecular Charge Fluxes in the Hydrogen-Bond-Induced Frequency Shifts of the OH Stretching Mode of Water

Hajime Torii et al.

Summary: The relationship between the vibrational properties and electrostatic situations of the vibrating functional group is crucial for predicting vibrational spectroscopic features, especially for the OH stretching mode of water. This study revealed that the vibrational frequency and dipole derivative of the OH stretching mode are not solely of electrostatic origin, but are also influenced by intermolecular charge fluxes involving delocalized electronic motions.

Confined hydration in nanometer-graded plasma polymer films: Insights from surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy

Ezgi Bulbul et al.

Summary: The study investigates the structural characteristics of water molecules penetrating into nanoporous homogeneous and nanograded siloxane plasma polymer films over a 24-hour timescale. It is found that chemically graded PPFs significantly change the average interfacial water orientation, with diffusion of water through the hydrophobic matrix leading to deprotonation of matrix silanol groups upon connection to the aqueous environment. The presence of the subsurface vertical amphiphilic gradient amplifies these effects, while enhanced water uptake in oxygen-plasma modified graded PPFs masks such effects.

Molecular insights on confined water in the nanochannels of self-assembled ionic liquid crystal

Yoshiki Ishii et al.

Summary: The molecular simulations on the behavior of water molecules in nanochannels formed by self-assembled ionic liquid crystals reveal that water molecules are confined inside the nanochannels with the formation of hydrogen bonding network, allowing for water transport through the advantages of dissolution and diffusion mechanisms within the ionic nanochannels.

Short- and long-range crowding effects on water's hydrogen bond networks

Xiao You et al.

Summary: The study found that crowders introduce disorder within the first two solvation shells but stabilize ice-like order in water >1 nm from the crowder. Considering crowder chemical structure, conformation, and crowder-solvent interactions is a key step toward a complete description of crowded solutions for in vitro biomolecular studies.
