Sunscreens and their usefulness: have we made any progress in the last two decades?

Nick Serpone

Summary: Sunscreens have been developed for decades to protect against the harmful effects of UV radiation, but questions remain as to whether they are effective in preventing sunburns, skin aging, and most importantly, skin cancers. Research in the past two decades has focused on protection against UVA radiation, with discussions also covering the safety of sunscreen ingredients and how to enhance their protective effects.
