Experimental investigation of different brines imbibition influences on co- and counter-current oil flows in carbonate reservoirs

Pouyan Ahmadi et al.

Summary: In this experimental study, it was found that smart water has a higher oil recovery rate compared to low salinity water in co- and counter-current imbibition processes, and the interaction between co-current and counter-current intensifies the production of oil in the latter. Additionally, reducing the length of the porous medium and increasing permeability both lead to a decrease in counter-current oil production.

Zheyu Liu et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation of flow regimes in a rectangular micmchannel using a water-oil system revealed four distinct flow regimes based on parameters such as viscosity ratios, velocity ratios, and capillary numbers. An exponential correlation was found between viscosity ratio and velocity ratio in transitioning flow regimes, with different effects on droplet size and slug length.

A systematic research on spontaneous imbibition of surfactant solutions for low permeability sandstone reservoirs

Derong Xu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the static imbibition efficiencies of different surfactants based on molecular structures, finding that sulfate anionic surfactants showed better wettability alteration ability than sulfonate surfactants. Increasing the hydrophilicity of surfactants by introducing the ethylene oxide (EO) groups to the surfactant structures was effective in enhancing wettability alteration ability. Surfactants with longer carbon chain (C16 surfactants) enhanced more imbibition recovery than short carbon chain surfactants (C12 surfactants).

Mechanism of using liquid nanofluid to enhance oil recovery in tight oil reservoirs

Xingyuan Liang et al.

Summary: Liquid nanofluid (LNF) can be transported in nano-scale pores efficiently without excessive adsorption, increasing oil recovery efficiency. During the imbibition process, with wettability alteration and proper interfacial tension, LNF displaces oil more effectively. The higher retained permeability reduces flow resistance and energy consumption while indirectly increasing production.

Summary: The study reveals the influence of different mineral types on the migration behavior and resistance of tight oil in nano-pore throat systems. Sandstone tight oil is found to be the easiest to accumulate, while carbonate and moderate lipophilic clay are expected to become key areas of tight oil exploration in the future. The results provide theoretical support for tight oil exploration based on migration resistance and basin overpressure characteristics.
