Changes to interfacial characteristics by low salinity water/nanoparticle flooding in carbonate reservoir

Sunlee Han et al.

Summary: Nano-enhanced oil recovery (nano-EOR) and low salinity water flooding (LSWF) were studied as promising methods for improving oil recovery in carbonate reservoirs. The use of SiO2 and Al2O3 nanoparticles showed different effects on contact angle and interfacial tension (IFT), ultimately leading to a significant decrease in capillary pressure and improved oil displacement efficiency. Additional experiments are needed to further investigate the effects of different nanoparticles and salinity conditions on interfacial properties.

Pore-Scale X-ray Imaging of Wetting Alteration and Oil Redistribution during Low-Salinity Flooding of Berea Sandstone

Edward Andrews et al.

Summary: Changing the wetting state of rocks through low-salinity flooding can facilitate oil recovery, with 22% of oil being redistributed within the rock. However, this wetting alteration only leads to an additional recovery of three percentage points. Observations using X-ray scanning show how oil and brine redistribute in the pores of rocks in response to low-salinity flooding.

Pore-Scale Investigation of the Ion-Tuned Water Effect on the Surface Properties of Limestone Reservoirs

Artur Shapoval et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that ion-tuned waterflooding can alter the wettability of reservoir rocks and increase oil recovery. At low calcium concentration, electrical double-layer expansion is the dominant mechanism, while surface ion exchange plays a primary role at high calcium concentration.
