The Impact of Dementia on Cancer Treatment Decision-Making, Cancer Treatment, and Mortality: A Mixed Studies Review

Yaelin Caba et al.

Summary: The impact of dementia on cancer treatment decision-making, cancer treatment, and mortality in older adults is not well-understood, with current practices in treatment-decision making for patients with cancer and dementia being inconsistent. Patients with dementia are less likely to receive curative treatment and more likely to prefer less aggressive care, focusing on quality of life over life expectancy. There is an urgent need for treatment guidelines that consider patient and caregiver perspectives for this growing patient population.

The Impact of Dementia on Cancer Treatment Decision-Making, Cancer Treatment, and Mortality: A Mixed Studies Review

Yaelin Caba et al.

Summary: This study found that older cancer patients with dementia are more likely to receive palliative care and less likely to receive curative treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. They also have a higher mortality rate compared to cancer patients without dementia. Qualitative studies consistently show that clinicians, caregivers, and patients prefer less aggressive care for dementia patients with cancer and prioritize quality of life over life expectancy.
