In Situ Formation of Cationic pi-Allylpalladium Precatalysts in Alcoholic Solvents: Application to C-N Bond Formation

Philippe Steinsoultz et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient Buchwald-Hartwig crosscoupling reaction in alcoholic solvent, where a low catalyst loading exhibited excellent performance. Mechanistically, extremely bulky biarylphosphine ligands interact with the dimeric precatalyst to form active catalysts in situ, with alcoholic solvents playing a prominent role in the formation of the active catalyst.

Selective semi-hydrogenation of internal alkynes catalyzed by Pd-CaCO3 clusters

Jordi Ballesteros-Soberanas et al.

Summary: This study presents the de-novo synthesis of soluble or solid-supported Pd-(CaCO3)(n) clusters (n = 2-13) and their high catalytic activity for the semi-hydrogenation of internal alkynes compared to terminal alkynes. Mechanistic studies reveal that the reactivity, where internal alkynes are more reactive than terminal alkynes, arises from the higher electrophilicity of the Pd-(CaCO3)(n) cluster compared to the nanoparticulated Lindlar catalyst, highlighting the advantages of isolating the minimum catalytic unit of a solid catalyst. Translating solid active sites into soluble catalysts represents a paradigmatic shift in catalyst design.

Silylene-Bridged Tetranuclear Palladium Cluster as a Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Alkenes and Alkynes

Chikako Yanagisawa et al.

Summary: A planar tetranuclear palladium cluster was synthesized from the reaction of a cyclotetrasilane with [Pd((CNBu)-Bu-t)(2)](3), exhibiting efficient catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and DFT calculations revealed that the tetranuclear framework was effectively supported by the bridging organosilylene ligand.

Solvent molecules form surface redox mediators in situ and cocatalyze O2 reduction on Pd

Jason S. Adams et al.

Summary: Solvent molecules play a crucial role in influencing the reactions of molecular hydrogen and oxygen on palladium nanoparticles, particularly methanol and water acting as cocatalysts for oxygen reduction. Methanol generates hydroxymethyl intermediates while water heterolytically oxidizes hydrogen to produce hydronium ions and provide electrons for oxygen reduction.

Atomically Dispersed Pd Atoms on a Simple MgO Support with an Ultralow Loading for Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene to Ethylene

Chao Qin et al.

Summary: A simple and efficient Pd/MgO catalyst with ppm level of Pd loaded (7.8 ppm) for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene was reported. The catalyst exhibited excellent performance with high conversion of acetylene (97%), high selectivity of ethylene (89%) and good stability. Furthermore, it was found that atomically dispersed Pd atoms are not active for ethylene hydrogenation, and H-2 dissociates at isolated Pd atoms in a heterolytic manner forming O-H bond, which may contribute to the high selectivity.

Chenqi Shen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that a 2D enhanced interface-confined effect can improve the catalytic performance of palladium-lead nanosheets in the semihydrogenation, achieving high efficiency semihydrogenation of various alkynes. The strategy could provide a general platform for high-performance catalysts.

Regioirregular and catalytic Mizoroki-Heck reactions

Francisco Garnes-Portoles et al.

Summary: The palladium-catalysed cross-coupling reaction between alkenes and aryl halides (the Mizoroki-Heck reaction) is a powerful method to construct new carbon-carbon bonds. Ligand-free methodologies disrupt the extreme regioselectivity on the double bond, significantly expanding the chemical space of the Mizoroki-Heck coupling.
