Current State of the First COVID-19 Vaccines

Birgit M. Pruss

Summary: The SARS CoV-2 and COVID-19 pandemic devastated the world in 2020, with measures like masks and social distancing losing efficacy due to pandemic fatigue. The announcement of vaccines by three manufacturers with 90% efficacy or higher brought hope to those looking to get vaccinated soon. Global distribution plans for vaccines face challenges, particularly in Africa and South America.

Double-headed nucleic acids condense the molecular information of DNA to half the number of nucleotides

Kasper M. Beck et al.

Summary: Research has shown that double-headed nucleotides containing two nucleobases each can form two sets of functional Watson-Crick base pairs when incorporated into dsDNA, behaving as dinucleotides. By preparing three new double-headed nucleic acid monomers, it has been demonstrated that the molecular information of 10 Watson-Crick base pairs can be condensed into highly stable 5-mer DhNA duplexes.

Recent progress in non-native nucleic acid modifications

Luke K. McKenzie et al.

Summary: Natural RNA and DNA are used by Nature to store and process genetic information, but modified oligonucleotides at the nucleobase, sugar, and/or phosphate backbone level are widely used in medicine and technology to overcome limitations. This review provides an overview of non-native modifications and challenges in the design, synthesis, application, and outlook of novel modified oligonucleotides.
