Cross-Coupling Reactions of Aryl Halides with Primary and Secondary Aliphatic Alcohols Catalyzed by an O,N,N-Coordinated Nickel Complex

Toru Hashimoto et al.

Summary: A nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and primary or secondary aliphatic alcohols has been achieved using a bench-stable nickel complex supported by a monoanionic O,N,N-tridentate ligand. The reaction proceeds smoothly without the need for a phosphine ligand, giving moderate to good yields of alkyl aryl ethers.

N-Methylphenothiazine S-Oxide Enabled Oxidative C(sp(2))-C(sp(2)) Coupling of Boronic Acids with Organolithiums via Phenothiaziniums

Tatsuki Yoshida et al.

Summary: This study developed a transition-metal-free oxidative C(sp(2))-C(sp(2) coupling of boronic acids and organolithiums using phenothiazinium ions. N-methylphenothiazine Soxide (PTZSO) was found to efficiently convert boronic acids to phenothiazinium ions, with insights into the unique reactivity of PTZSO gained from theoretical calculations and experiments.

Site-Selective C-H alkylation of Complex Arenes by a Two-Step Aryl Thianthrenation-Reductive Alkylation Sequence

Beatrice Lansbergen et al.

Summary: In this study, an undirected para-selective two-step C-H alkylation method for complex arenes useful for late-stage functionalization is presented. By combining site-selective C-H thianthrenation with palladium-catalyzed reductive electrophile cross-coupling, a diverse range of synthetically useful alkylated arenes can be accessed with high selectivity and practicality. The robustness of this transformation is further demonstrated by thianthrenium-based reductive coupling of two complex fragments.

Radical Anion Promoted Chemoselective Cleavage of Csp2-S Bond Enables Formal Cross-Coupling of Aryl Methyl Sulfones with Alcohols

Jixiang Bai et al.

Summary: A novel formal cross-coupling of aryl methyl sulfones and alcohols to afford alkyl aryl ethers via an S(RN)1 pathway was developed, with the key step successfully utilized in the preparation of two marketed antitubercular drugs. The study revealed a dimsyl-anion initiated radical chain process as the major pathway, and DFT calculations indicated that the formation of a radical anion via nucleophilic addition of alkoxide to the aryl radical is crucial in determining the observed chemoselectivity.

Summary: This study demonstrates a simple and selective germylation reaction at room temperature using a stable Ge source and dibenzothiophenium salts. Furthermore, it also successfully achieved the cross-coupling of newly made E-alkenyl germanes under air-tolerant nanoparticle catalysis, enabling chemoselective arylation.

Porous polymeric ligand promoted copper-catalyzed C-N coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides under visible-light irradiation

Erfei Wang et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a porous polymeric ligand (PPL) complexed with copper has generated a heterogeneous catalyst (Cu@PPL) that allows efficient C-N coupling with various (hetero)aryl chlorides under mild conditions of visible-light irradiation. This method is applicable to aqueous ammonia and substituted amines, compatible with a variety of functional groups and heterocycles, and allows tandem C-N couplings with conjunctive dihalides. The heterogeneous characteristic of Cu@PPL enables straightforward catalyst separation through multiple times of recycling with minimal catalytic efficiency loss.
