Self-Reported Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders: Relationship with Psychologic Well-Being, Psychologic Distress, and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationships between self-reported temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms, psychological well-being (PWB), psychological distress (PD), and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Participants with more TMD symptoms tend to have lower scores in PWB, higher levels of PD, and poorer OHRQoL compared to those with fewer or no symptoms.

Viability of the quintessential 5 temporomandibular disorder symptoms as a TMD screener

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: This study explored the viability of using the 5 temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms (5Ts) of the Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs (DC/TMD) as a TMD screener. The results showed that the 5Ts demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy for identifying pain-related and/or intra-articular disorders.

THE VOICE OF THE PATIENT IN OROFACIAL PAIN MANAGEMENT

Birgitta Haggman-Henrikson et al.

Summary: As pain cannot be objectively measured, patient reported outcomes (PROs) are crucial for evaluating and managing patients with orofacial pain. Some PROs are specific to dentistry (dPROs), while others are not. It is important to understand the relevant outcomes and domains for patients with pain complaints within the biopsychosocial model.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE AND SCORING OF ORAL HEALTH IMPACT PROFILE VERSIONS

M. T. John et al.

Summary: This study assessed the measurement of overall oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) construct and its four dimensions using several versions of OHIP, and provided recommendations for their use and scoring. The results showed high correlations between the summary scores of the 5, 14, 19, and 49 item versions, indicating similar measurement of OHRQoL across different versions. Based on the findings, it is recommended to use the 5-item OHIP version for psychometrically sound and practical assessment of OHRQoL.

Methodological considerations when measuring oral health-related quality of life

Daniel R. Reissmann

Summary: This review article discussed the importance of dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs) and their measures (dPROMs) in evidence-based dentistry, particularly focusing on OHRQoL assessment for adults. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) is the most commonly used and methodologically best investigated instrument for capturing OHRQoL, with the 5-item version being the most patient-friendly. Evaluating the resulting scores and comparing them to norms from different populations is essential in deriving valid and meaningful results.

Quality of life in young and middle age adult temporomandibular disorders patients and asymptomatic subjects: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Lucas Bozzetti Pigozzi et al.

Summary: The study compared the quality of life between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients and non-TMD subjects diagnosed with RDC/TMD or DC/TMD. The findings showed that all axis I TMD patients, especially in groups I and III, had significantly lower quality of life with higher pain intensity and disability compared to group II.

Temporomandibular disorder subtypes, emotional distress, impaired sleep, and oral health-related quality of life in Asian patients

Jie Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with painful temporomandibular disorders have higher levels of emotional distress, sleep impairments, and poorer oral health-related quality of life. Additionally, there is a significant association between painful TMDs and increased stress levels and decreased OHRQoL. Routine evaluation of biopsychosocial distress is important for these patients.

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: The study found that the number and type of TMD symptoms can impact participants' psychological distress and oral health-related quality of life. Participants with more and all types of TMD symptoms generally exhibited significantly higher levels of psychological distress and worse OHRQoL.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a heterogeneous group of disorders involving the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and surrounding structures. The etiology is multifactorial, including biological, psychological, and social factors. Psychological factors play a significant role in the development of TMD, affecting the onset, course, and treatment response of the disorder.

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: The study found that middle-aged and old adults comprised about a quarter of TMD patients, with painful TMDs being more prevalent in these age groups. While there were no significant differences in psychological states and overall OHRQoL among different age groups, middle-aged and old adults had significantly lower OHRQoL in the domain of physical pain.
