Postoperative Urinary Retention after Benign Gynecologic Surgery with a Liberal versus Strict Voiding Protocol

Matthew T. Siedhoff et al.

Summary: A study on postoperative urinary retention (POUR) after benign gynecologic surgery found that the risk is low and does not differ between liberal and strict voiding protocols. Among patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery (MIS), a liberal voiding protocol was associated with shorter length of hospital stay (LOS) and possibly improved efficiency in postoperative recovery.

Incidence and Predictive Risk Factors of Postoperative Urinary Retention After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty

Daniel N. Bracey et al.

Summary: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common complication, with 20% of patients affected in this study. Factors such as bladder scan volumes in the PACU, BMI, operative duration, ASA scores, and narcotic use were found to be associated with POUR. Anesthetic types and perioperative administration of NSAIDs and glycopyrrolate were identified as potential predictors of POUR.
