Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and the Understanding of Behavior

David Pitcher et al.

Summary: This review explores the new phase of sophistication in the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in studying psychological functions, focusing on the physiological and technical achievements, as well as new perceptual and cognitive experiments. The different uses and challenges of TMS in mental chronometry, perception, awareness, learning, and memory are summarized.

A sense of number in invertebrates

Maria Bortot et al.

Summary: Non-symbolic numerical abilities are not limited to vertebrates, as recent evidence shows that invertebrates also possess the ability to discriminate quantities, use the ordinal property of numbers, solve arithmetic operations, and understand the concept of zero numerosity. The debate is ongoing regarding whether invertebrates have a sense of number specific to discrete countable quantities or if it is part of a more general magnitude system that deals with both discrete and continuous quantities.

Biological sex differences in afferent-mediated inhibition of motor responses evoked by TMS

Claudia Turco et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate if biological sex influences the magnitude of short-latency and long-latency afferent inhibition (SAI and LAI) and found that there were no significant differences in afferent inhibition between males and females, although females may exhibit increased inhibition under certain conditions.

Diagnostic contribution and therapeutic perspectives of transcranial magnetic stimulation in dementia

Vincenzo Di Lazzaro et al.

Summary: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a powerful tool for assessing cortical properties such as excitability, plasticity, and connectivity in humans. TMS has been applied in dementia patients to identify potential markers of pathophysiology and predictors of cognitive decline. Combining multiple TMS measures and neurophysiological indices can support clinical diagnosis and predict disease progression. Repetitive TMS has shown promise as a therapeutic intervention for improving cognition in AD patients, especially at mild stages of the disease. Additional brain imaging and electrophysiological tools are needed to optimize TMS treatment protocols for individual patients with dementia.

Contribution of TMS and TMS-EEG to the Understanding of Mechanisms Underlying Physiological Brain Aging

Andrea Guerra et al.

Summary: Aging in the human brain is characterized by neuronal loss and disruption of synapses, but there is evidence that the brain can reorganize itself. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coupled with electromyography or electroencephalography (EEG) can be used to study brain aging mechanisms, focusing on excitability, connectivity, and plasticity. More studies are needed to further understand the potential contribution of TMS findings in clinical settings.
