Task- and Intensity-Dependent Modulation of Arm-Trunk Neural Interactions in the Corticospinal Pathway in Humans

Atsushi Sasaki et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate neural interactions between arm and trunk or arm and leg muscles during different arm muscle contractions. The results showed that trunk extensor corticospinal excitability depends on the task and the intensity of arm contraction, while this is not true for trunk flexor and leg muscles.

How to improve the muscle synergy analysis methodology?

Nicolas A. Turpin et al.

Summary: Muscle synergy analysis is a popular technique used to analyze and understand motor coordination, with attention to input data quality and quantity, as well as the level of muscle group activation during experiments. Concurrent use of various synergy formulations is encouraged for robust identification of synergies.

Evidence for constancy in the modularity of trunk muscle activity preceding reaching: implications for the role of preparatory postural activity

Alexander Stamenkovic et al.

Summary: Postural muscle activity precedes voluntary upper limb movements and may be more related to generating movement goals rather than stability. Despite changing postural constraints, functional muscle weightings and spatial tuning in trunk muscles remain constant across tasks of varying trunk involvement.

Functional synergy recruitment index as a reliable biomarker of motor function and recovery in chronic stroke patients

Nerea Irastorza-Landa et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel method to measure the temporal correlation between recruitment profiles of healthy modules by paretic and healthy muscles following stroke, termed FSRI, which was shown to be a reliable physiological biomarker for motor function and recovery. Furthermore, BMI-based training with contingent positive proprioceptive feedback was found to improve FSRI values, enhancing effective rehabilitation in stroke patients.

Effects of gravity and kinematic constraints on muscle synergies in arm cycling

Lilla Botzheim et al.

Summary: This study explored muscle coordination in arm cycling under different biomechanical constraints, finding that body position and cranking mode have significant effects on muscle synergies, while movement size has little impact. Results suggest that the central nervous system adapts motor control strategies based on external constraints during arm cycling tasks.

Approaches to revealing the neural basis of muscle synergies: a review and a critique

Vincent C. K. Cheung et al.

Summary: Current research focuses on exploring the neural basis of muscle synergies within the central nervous system, investigating the organization of synergies and the stimulations of relevant cortical loci, but the involvement of motor cortex in organizing synergies remains uncertain. Progress may be facilitated by incorporating prior knowledge from neurophysiology into models and algorithms.

Flexible Recruitments of Fundamental Muscle Synergies in the Trunk and Lower Limbs for Highly Variable Movements and Postures

Hiroki Saito et al.

Summary: The study found that there are 13 muscle synergies with unique functional roles, which can account for almost all tasks by combining single or multiple synergies. This suggests that the central nervous system flexibly recruits fundamental muscle synergies to execute diverse human behaviors. Further research is needed to validate the neural representation of these fundamental components of muscle synergies.

Basic locomotor muscle synergies used in land walking are finely tuned during underwater walking

Hikaru Yokoyama et al.

Summary: Muscular control during underwater walking has been studied at the individual muscle level, but it is recognized that the human nervous system modularly controls multiple muscles through muscle synergies. The same muscle synergies were found to be shared between land walking and water walking tasks, with some task-dependent modulation in activation combinations and temporal patterns. The results suggest that the human nervous system modulates activation of lower-limb muscles during water walking by fine-tuning basic locomotor muscle synergies used during land walking.

Cortical Re-organization After Traumatic Brain Injury Elicited Using Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy: A Case Report

Matija Milosevic et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that FEST can effectively improve motor function and increase cortical activations in individuals with chronic TBI. Short-term and long-term assessments indicated increased M1 activation after FEST intervention, which remained stable during follow-ups, suggesting a promising rehabilitation approach for TBI patients.
