Action potential subpopulations within human muscle sympathetic nerve activity: Discharge properties and governing mechanisms

Stephen A. Klassen et al.

Summary: Sympathetic nerve activity directed towards skeletal muscle circulation plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis and supporting human survival during physiological stress. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is characterized by pulse-rhythmic bursts formed by differently-sized sympathetic action potentials (APs), with various subpopulations exhibiting heterogeneous discharge, recruitment, and synchronization patterns. The regulation of AP subpopulations within MSNA is complex and involves differential control mechanisms including the arterial baroreflex and paravertebral ganglia.
