Plug-and-play control of a brain-computer interface through neural map stabilization

Daniel B. Silversmith et al.

Summary: The study showed that long-term closed-loop decoder adaptation can improve the stability and performance of BCI systems, as transferring decoder weights across sessions over multiple days can facilitate consolidation of neural maps. In contrast, daily reinitialization leads to performance degradation and variable relearning.

On the way home: a BCI-FES hand therapy self-managed by sub-acute SCI participants and their caregivers: a usability study

Anna Zulauf-Czaja et al.

Summary: The study introduced a system for hand therapy based on brain-computer interface and functional electrical stimulation to be used at home. Researchers trained occupational therapists who then taught caregivers to set up the system for individuals with spinal cord injury. Results showed high accuracy and efficiency of the system, with high satisfaction ratings from users and caregivers.

Home Use of a Percutaneous Wireless Intracortical Brain-Computer Interface by Individuals With Tetraplegia

John D. Simeral et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the first human use of a wireless broadband iBCI system, achieving high-resolution recording and decoding of neural signals from individuals with paralysis. Results showed equivalent communication bitrates between wireless and cabled iBCIs, and participants were able to control a standard commercial tablet computer wirelessly for various tasks.

Long-term intracortical microelectrode array performance in a human: a 5 year retrospective analysis

Samuel C. Colachis et al.

Summary: This study presents findings on the long-term performance of intracortical microelectrode arrays (MEAs) in a human subject over a span of 5 years. While neural signal quality deteriorated rapidly within the first year, BCI performance remained high even after 5 years of implantation. The study also highlights unexpected signal disruptions during chronic MEA use, emphasizing the importance of detecting and mitigating such disruptions as BCI technology advances towards home usage.

Implantable brain-computer interface for neuroprosthetic-enabled volitional hand grasp restoration in spinal cord injury

Iahn Cajigas et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a method for restoring hand grasp control using a fully implanted brain-computer interface in a home environment. Movement-intent was used to trigger functional electrical stimulation, resulting in improvements in both speed and accuracy of upper extremity tasks. The decoding accuracy of movement-intent remained consistent throughout the study, showing potential for reliable volitional control of hand grasp.
