Recent Progress in Ionic Liquid Extraction for the Separation of Rare Earth Elements

Hiroyuki Okamura et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent progress in the solvent extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) using ionic liquids (IL) as extractants. The advantages of IL extraction systems, such as improved efficiency and unique extracted complexes, are highlighted. Various types of IL extraction systems and their effectiveness in enhancing REE extractability and separability are discussed, including the use of anionic ligands, neutral ligands, synergistic extraction, and task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs).
