Phase behaviors of classic liquid crystal dimers and trimers: Alternate induction of smectic and twist-bend nematic phases depending on spacer parity for liquid crystal trimers

Yuki Arakawa et al.

Summary: This study synthesized a series of classic LC trimer homologs and reevaluated their elusive monotropic mesophases, revealing the novel heliconical NTB phase in achiral bent molecules. The alternating induction of Sm and NTB phases depending on n parity was only observed in LC trimer homologs, suggesting steric interactions play a crucial role in determining the mesophase behavior.

Carbonyl- and thioether-linked cyanobiphenyl-based liquid crystal dimers exhibiting twist-bend nematic phases

Yuki Arakawa et al.

Summary: A novel series of ketone-type liquid crystal dimers CBCOnSCB, with odd numbers of alkylene spacers, were developed in this study. The CBCOnSCB dimers exhibited twist-bend nematic phases with higher phase-transition temperatures compared to previously reported analogs. Additionally, CBCOnSCB showed a tendency to crystallize. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis was also performed on CBCO5SCB.

Photo-driven effects in twist-bend nematic phases: Dynamic and memory response of liquid crystalline dimers

Daniel Zaton et al.

Summary: UV light is applied to control the stability of twist-bend nematic phases and conventional nematic phases in new liquid crystalline nonsymmetric dimers. The dynamic and static dielectric responses of the dimers are measured at different temperatures, showing high dielectric values and anisotropy. Isothermal phase transitions are promoted by light-irradiation, and the dynamics and reversibility of these transitions can be controlled by varying the chemical structure of the dimers, temperature, and UV light dosage.

Methylene- and thioether-linked cyanobiphenyl-based liquid crystal dimers CBnSCB exhibiting room temperature twist-bend nematic phases and glasses

Yuki Arakawa et al.

Summary: This study developed a series of stable N-TB phase liquid crystal dimers and observed their glass formation below room temperature. Compared to previously reported analogs, these new liquid crystal phases exhibit more stable and vitrifiable characteristics.
