Silica Fouling in Reverse Osmosis Systems-Operando Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Studies

Vitaliy Pipich et al.

Summary: In this study, operando small-angle neutron scattering experiments were conducted on silica fouling at two reverse osmosis membranes under almost realistic conditions of practiced desalination technique. The results show that the formation of the crystalline cake layer is dependent on colloidal size, ionic strength, and cross-flow, with the process being reversible in most cases but irreversible in some situations. Enhanced silica concentration and cake formation above the membrane indicate a first order liquid-solid phase transformation.

Comparison of Nanofiltration with Reverse Osmosis in Reclaiming Tertiary Treated Municipal Wastewater for Irrigation Purposes

MhdAmmar Hafiz et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis technologies for the reclamation of ultrafiltered municipal wastewater for irrigation. The permeate from the reverse osmosis process met FAO standards at lower pressures, but did not comply with irrigation water standards at higher pressures in terms of chloride, sodium, and calcium concentrations.

The role of intraparticle diffusion path length during electro-assisted regeneration of ion exchange resins: Implications for selective adsorbent design and reverse osmosis pretreatment

Hang Dong et al.

Summary: This study developed a RO pretreatment process using electro-assisted regeneration to selectively remove calcium and phosphate from wastewater. By reducing intraparticle diffusion path length to enhance regenerability, the efficiency of adsorbents can be improved.
