Tailoring catalyst layer structures for anion exchange membrane fuel cells by controlling the size of ionomer aggreates in dispersion

Jonghyun Hyun et al.

Summary: The rational design guide for cathode and anode catalyst layers using m-TPN1 ionomer can lead to a more uniform ionomer distribution and larger triple-phase-boundary. Enhanced power density of membrane-electrode-assembly is achieved as the ionomer distribution of the cathode catalyst layer becomes more uniform. The power density at fully humidified condition is strongly correlated with the porosity of anode catalyst layer due to the limitation of hydrogen transport at anode by water flooding.

Understanding dynamic behavior of proton exchange membrane fuel cell in the view of internal dynamics based on impedance

Hao Yuan et al.

Summary: In this paper, the transient characteristic of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is studied. The fixed frequency impedance is used as an assist signal for voltage response interpretation and internal mechanism analysis. The effects of different conditions on the dynamic response of the PEM fuel cell are investigated, and the transient variation of impedance under different current densities is studied. The results show that the voltage response is closely related to internal hydration state and oxygen transfer.

Exploring H-bonding interaction to enhance proton permeability of an acid-selective membrane

Wanjie Song et al.

Summary: In this study, acid-selective membranes were successfully fabricated by grafting urea and quaternary ammoniums onto hydrophobic polymer backbones. The intramolecular H-bonding interactions between urea units facilitated self-assembly of the side chains and the formation of continuous acid transport channels, while the produced QA clusters enabled fast anion transportation. The resulting membranes exhibited high acid/salt selectivity and operational stability, making them promising for acid recovery applications.

Densely Quaternized Fluorinated Poly(fluorenyl ether)s with Excellent Conductivity and Stability for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: The design of DQA-TAPFE ion exchange membranes with a rigid fluorinated backbone and flexible multi-cationic side chains shows promising potential for vanadium redox flow battery applications. Compared to traditional dispersal of cationic groups, DQA-TAPFE exhibits higher SO42- conductivity and lower VO2+ permeability, leading to improved energy efficiency and capacity retention in VRFBs.

A rod-coil grafts strategy for N-spirocyclic functionalized anion exchange membranes with high fuel cell power density

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study proposed a rod-coil grafts design to enhance microphase separation in N-spirocyclic anion exchange membranes, resulting in improved conductivity and toughness. By optimizing the n-octylamine hydrophobic coil graft length, the N-spirocyclic AEM showed high OH- conductivity and power density, placing it among the top level of cycloaliphatic AEMs reported in literature.

Ultra-thin quaternized polybenzimidazole anion exchange membranes with throughout OH- conducive highway networks for high-performance fuel cells

Xiaozhou Wang et al.

Summary: This study establishes an ion conductive highway network in quaternized polybenzimidazole (PBI) AEMs to enhance ion conductivity and mechanical strength, leading to a high peak power density of about 1162.3 mW cm(-2) in H-2/O-2 fuel cells. The design of throughout conductive highway network makes PBI material one of the best candidates for AEMFCs.
