Combining Renewable Eleostearic Acid and Eugenol to Fabricate Sustainable Plasticizer and Its Effect of Plasticizing on PVC

Yufeng Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of two sustainable plasticizers on the plasticization of PVC materials, revealing that epoxidized EAEE exhibited better flexibility and thermal stability compared to EAEE. The stronger hydrogen bonding and intermolecular interactions between epoxidized EAEE and PVC contributed to its superior plasticization efficiency. The flexible alkane chains and polar groups in the structure of epoxidized EAEE led to enhanced compatibility with PVC, resulting in homogeneous and smooth surfaces of the plasticized PVC films.

Preparation of nonmigratory flexible poly(vinyl chloride)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(vinyl chloride) via aqueous reversible deactivation radical polymerization in a pilot reactor

Carlos M. R. Abreu et al.

Summary: Industrially viable nonmigratory internal plasticization of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is achieved through the synthesis of block copolymer poly(vinyl chloride)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-b-PBA-b-PVC) using aqueous single electron transfer degenerative chain transfer living radical polymerization (SET-DTLRP) technique. The resulting copolymers showed better overall performance than commercial flexible PVC due to the introduction of a temperature step in the synthesis process. The non-migratory nature of the plasticizing moieties of the PVC-b-PBA-b-PVC block copolymers ensures the stability of the material after extraction.

Ignition and Charring of PVC-Based Electric Cables

Romain Meinier et al.

Summary: The ignition of four different PVC-based electric cables was studied, revealing that lower heat flux resulted in higher char amount at ignition. Despite char formation, Quintiere's equation can still accurately calculate the ignition time of the cables, with an apparent temperature ranging from 312°C to 349°C.

Non-phthalate plasticizer DENT preserves adequate blood component quality during storage in PVC blood bags

Linda Larsson et al.

Summary: This study compared blood bags made with DEHT and DEHP plasticizers, finding that although there was slightly higher hemolysis in DEHT, all results remained below the European limit. DEHT was shown to provide adequate blood component quality and is proposed as a strong candidate for replacing DEHP in blood bags.

Experimental characterization and modeling of boundary conditions and flame spread dynamics observed in the UL-94V test

Conor G. McCoy et al.

Summary: In this study, the UL-94 vertical burning test was characterized by measuring temperature, oxygen content, and heat flux of the burner flame. Tests were conducted using PMMA samples with and without insulated sides, and the results showed significant differences in flame heat flux between the two types of samples. The developed model can be applied to non-charring polymeric solids and further research is needed to explore its applicability for charring and intumescent materials.

Thermal dehydrochlorination of pure PVC polymer: Part I-thermal degradation kinetics by thermogravimetric analysis

Patrick Pimenta R. Cruz et al.

Summary: The thermal degradation of PVC occurs in two stages, with each stage subdivided into two substages. The dehydrochlorination stage, which is poorly understood, involves the formation of HCl as a catalyst. The study focused on the molecular structure and kinetic parameters during this stage, showing that the dehydrochlorination process follows a first order reaction model and involves nucleation and growth.

Research progress of novel bio-based plasticizers and their applications in poly(vinyl chloride)

Zheming Zhang et al.

Summary: PVC, widely used around the world, has traditionally been plasticized with petroleum-based chemicals, but their negative impact on health and environment have led to restrictions in certain regions. The development of bio-based PVC plasticizers as alternatives is important, with various types extensively studied and categorized by raw materials and chemical structure. Understanding the relationship between chemical structure and plasticizing performance is key to predicting the efficiency of these novel plasticizers.

Summary: This paper reviews the trend of replacing commonly used plasticizers in PVC with new compounds to enhance mechanical properties and plasticizing efficiency. The novel plasticizers are divided into three groups based on the replacement strategy. Comparison of the chemical and physical properties of PVC formulations with different plasticizers shows improvements in polymer performance with some new plasticizers.

Roya Jamarani et al.

Summary: The family of poly(caprolactone) (PCL)-based oligomeric additives were found to be effective plasticizers for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), improving migration resistance, lowering glass transition temperature, and increasing elongation at break. These additives showed significantly reduced leaching into hexanes compared to commonly used plasticizers like DINP and DHPS, with shorter carbon chain lengths exhibiting a higher reduction in leaching.
