MHD R&D Activities for Liquid Metal Blankets

Chiara Mistrangelo et al.

Summary: The European design strategy has identified mature concepts for DEMO breeding blankets that require reduced technological extrapolation and testing in ITER. Understanding magnetohydrodynamic interactions and other physical phenomena in liquid metal blankets is crucial for optimizing test blanket module designs. Both numerical and experimental approaches are being discussed to reliably predict processes in liquid metal blankets.

Effect of Magnetic Field on the Corrosion of API-5L-X65 Steel Using Electrochemical Methods in a Flow Loop

Shahid Parapurath et al.

Summary: Limited studies have been conducted on the effect of a magnetic field on the corrosion behavior of steels. Investigating the effect on pipeline material in the oil and gas industries will be beneficial regarding corrosion prediction and control. Results show that the presence of a magnetic field increases the corrosion rate of API 5L X65 carbon steel, with flow velocities and magnetic orientation influencing the anodic corrosion current significantly. This study provides important direction in understanding the combined effect of magnetism and flow on corrosion in pipelines used in the oil and gas industries.
