Inter-domain horizontal gene transfer of nickel-binding superoxide dismutase

K. M. Sutherland et al.

Summary: The regulatory role of SOD enzymes, especially SodN, in aerobic microorganisms is crucial for cell health and survival. Evolutionary history shows convergence in the genes encoding different SOD enzymes, driven by environmental selection factors like oxygen levels and metal availability. Horizontal gene transfer plays a significant role in the diversity and distribution of SodN, with evidence of multiple transfers between bacterial and archaeal domains. Additionally, the widespread presence of sodN in various microbial groups suggests its adaptation to changing environmental conditions, particularly in response to decreasing iron availability in the surface ocean.

Timing the evolution of antioxidant enzymes in cyanobacteria

Joanne S. Boden et al.

Summary: Research shows that ancestral cyanobacteria had the ability to deal with oxidative stress as early as the Archaean, gradually evolving more cofactors. The evolutionary history of metalloenzymes reveals how early cyanobacteria managed reactive oxygen species.

Bacterial Evolutionary Precursors of Eukaryotic Copper-Zinc Superoxide Dismutases

Gareth S. A. Wright

Summary: The internalization of a bacteria by an archaeal cell accelerated eukaryotic evolution by utilizing a specific copper chaperone to activate CuZnSOD for combating oxidative stress. The adoption of a single protein interface with structural characteristics necessary for homodimerization and heterodimerization played a crucial role in evolution.
