Functional potential and assembly of microbes from sediments in a lake bay and adjoining river ecosystem for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation

Zaisheng Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that the PAH biodegradation capacity of the adjoining river ecosystem was much higher than that of the lake ecosystem, with a faster bioremediation capability; There were significant differences in sediment functional community structure and network interactions between different ecosystems; The activity of PAH degradation genes in LS needed to be biostimulated for accelerated degradation, while the functional communities in RS were capable of spontaneous natural attenuation of PAH.

Tracking spatio-temporal dynamics of fluorescence characteristics of Huangpu River, China by parallel factor analysis: Correlation with disinfection by-product precursor and pesticide level variations

Lingfei Li et al.

Summary: Fluorescence characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Huangpu River water were studied using fluorescence excitation emission matrix (EEM) coupled with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. Different components of fluorescence were identified with spatial and temporal variations, and the correlation between microbial humic-like fluorescence and the formation potential of N-DBPs was observed, providing insights for controlling specific DBPs precursor. Additionally, humic-like components were found to correlate with the concentrations of triazole and organophosphate pesticides in the Huangpu River, indicating the potential of fluorescence-PARAFAC analysis in assessing DBPFPs and pesticide occurrence in surface waters.
