Novel interpretable mechanism of neural networks based on network decoupling method

Dongli Duan et al.

Summary: The lack of interpretability of neural network algorithm has become a bottleneck for its wide application. The article proposes a general mathematical framework that couples the complex structure of the system with the nonlinear activation function to explore the dimension reduction method of high-dimensional system and reveal the calculation mechanism of the neural network. Results show a linear mapping relationship between network structure and behavior in high-dimensional and nonlinear neural networks.

Hybrid artificial neural network and cooperation search algorithm for nonlinear river flow time series forecasting in humid and semi-humid regions

Zhong-kai Feng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hybrid river flow forecasting method by integrating the novel cooperation search algorithm (CSA) into the learning process of artificial neural network (ANN). The experimental results show that the hybrid method based on ANN and CSA outperforms control models and yields superior forecasting results in different scenarios. The presented method demonstrates improvements in the efficiency and correlation values of the standard ANN method, indicating that the performance of artificial intelligence models in river flow time series forecasting can be effectively improved by metaheuristic algorithms.

Seasonal ensemble forecasts for soil moisture, evapotranspiration and runoff across Australia

E. Vogel et al.

Summary: The study assessed the seasonal predictability of hydrological variables at high resolution across Australia using a national seasonal ensemble forecasting system. The evaluation showed good skill for all variables at one-month lead time, and up to three months lead time for soil moisture and actual evapotranspiration in many key regions in Australia. The forecasts exhibited particularly high skill at longer lead times for low soil moisture and actual evapotranspiration events, with potential applications including hydrological drought prediction and bushfire risk assessments.

A self-identification Neuro-Fuzzy inference framework for modeling rainfall-runoff in a Chilean watershed

Yerel Morales et al.

Summary: The study introduces a Self-Identification Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Model (SINFIM) to model the relationship between rainfall and runoff in Chilean watersheds, with experimental results showing promising performance in predicting runoff. The model's efficiency is higher compared to other forecasting models and shows potential for accurately predicting peak runoff values from rainfall events without predefining time series lags or fuzzy rules.
